Currency of Change

Saturday 18 April 2026, 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Come see the hidden story in your pocket. From rich pre-colonial trade networks to rum-fueled barter in the early colonial days, through gold rush booms and into technological changes. It is more than coins and notes - it is a story of transformation, resilience, and identity.

Currency of Change explores the evolution of trade practices and everyday money management in Northeast Victoria, revealing how each shift in currency has influenced a new chapter in the Australian story.

Visit the Burke Museum this April and May to explore photographs and objects from the collection up close and discover how these everyday items reveal extraordinary stories.

It’s hard to visit Beechworth and not daydream of how life was in the Gold Rush era. So why not take it a step further? Walk through a recreation of the nineteenth century “Street of Shops”, examine a giant world globe so old it still shows the Russian Empire, and witness a genuine thylacine!
