Held in Victoria's beautiful Indigo Shire, the Oration honours the legacy of George Briscoe Kerferd (1831-1889), an energetic community leader, Premier of Victoria, and Judge of the Supreme Court.
Each year, an eminent speaker is invited to challenge our thinking, foster meaningful discussion, and promote active citizenship.
In 2025, we welcome Gillian Calvert AO, a leading advocate for children and families for over 40 years. As Australia's first Children's Commissioner, Gillian established the NSW Commission for Children and Young People as an internationally recognised voice for child-centred and inclusive policy. Her work spans leadership in public service, academia, and not-for-profit governance across sectors including housing, disability, aged care and refugee support.
In recognition of her lifelong dedication, Gillian was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2009.
The Oration is proudly sponsored by Indigo Shire Council, WAW Credit Union, and Quercus Beechworth
