Completed in 1864, the Old Beechworth Gaol is one of Australia's most significant historic gaols and an important part of Victoria's colonial history.

While many visitors are drawn by its famous connection to Ned Kelly, the stories held within these walls reach far beyond the Kelly legend.

For more than 140 years, the Gaol was a place of incarceration and punishment. Its cells held notorious bushrangers and prisoners from all walks of life, while generations of warders and governors worked within its walls. Their stories offer a fascinating insight into crime, justice and life in Victoria from the gold rush era through to the Gaol's closure in 2004.

Guided tours run daily with tickets available online or from the Old Beechworth Gaol Cafe. During Victorian school holidays, Family Tours offer an engaging experience designed for children.

In late 2024, the Old Beechworth Gaol was included on Australia's National Heritage List as part of the Beechworth Historic Precinct, recognising its outstanding significance to the nation.

The Old Beechworth Gaol is one of Australia’s most significant post European cultural sites. Its role in the chain of events that led to the execution of Ned Kelly is significant. It housed Ned’s mother, Ellen Kelly, many of the Kelly sympathisers and Ned himself, alongside his brother Dan and the rest of the Kelly gang. The Gaol was constructed in the 1860's with granite quarried onsite and remains a stunning example of gold rush architecture. Guided tours of the Old Beechworth Gaol run seven days a week at 11:00am and 12:00pm with more scheduled on busy holiday periods. Tour duration is approximately 45 minutes.
