Warm summers and cold winters highlight the diversity of colour and texture in foliage and form of the trees, which live side-byside with stone cottages and hand-hewn granite-lined gutters. Their familiarity reassured the pioneers who longed for European landscapes and residents and visitors alike can enjoy vistas planted up to 150 years ago, side by side with native species and new additions. The first Methodist church services in Beechworth were held in the open air by a Methodist miner and lay preacher, Mr C Williams. Shortly after, a tent was purchased for £20. More significant places of worship have survived the years.
