Main Hall

The heart of the original Athenaeum, our Main Hall still holds the original cabinets and collections from the 1860s and 1870s. The beloved bird and animal collection holds pride of place, alongside displays of rare shells and gemstones, and bound copies of Australia’s first ‘newspaper of record’, The Argus.

Street of Shops

The ‘Street of Shops’ evokes the atmosphere of Gold Rush Beechworth with recreated shopfronts and displays of historic artefacts. From the Star Theatre and the Gold Diggers Arms Hotel, to the Hirsutic & Tonsorial Temple, you can step back in time and peruse the latest commercial offerings from the height of the town’s mining boom.

People of Beechworth Exhibition

The Museum’s newest display, the award-winning ‘People of Beechworth’ exhibition showcases modern community members, connected to historical themes. ‘People of Beechworth’ explores themes such as food and culture, volunteering, sport, Chinese history and the fight for gender equality in both a historic and modern context, and demonstrates that history is not something confined to the past – it’s being made every day.
