Six of Australia’s finest players of the viola da gamba present a programme of music for two, three, four, five and six violas da gamba from 17th-century England in the historic surrounds of Beechworth’s Town Hall.

The concert includes works by William Lawes, Giovanni Coprario and Oliver Cromwell’s court organist, John Hingeston, as well as the rarely-heard lyra viol trios of John Jenkins.

This concert is a benefit concert for the Beechworth Organ Society. Works by Henry Purcell’s teacher, John Blow, will be performed on the Town Hall organ, recently returned to its original setting.

‘The Lofty Viol’ is part of a two-concert short series in the historic surrounds of Victoria’s best-preserved Gold Rush-era town. The series begins with ‘Stylus Phantasticus’ on November 30. Both events celebrate the launch of the Beechworth Weekend of Fine Music, which will run in Beechworth from 30 October to 1 November.
